A metabolic disorder called diabetes mellitus is characterised by high blood sugar (glucose) levels that are brought on by problems with insulin secretion or the body's utilisation of insulin. Normally, the hormone insulin, which is created by the pancreas, tightly regulates blood glucose levels. Blood sugar levels are reduced by insulin. The pancreas releases insulin when the blood glucose level rises, such as after eating. This insulin release encourages the absorption of glucose into body cells. Hyperglycemia occurs in diabetic patients when there is either insufficient or no response to insulin. Although it can be managed, diabetes is a chronic medical condition that lasts a lifetime. Insulin cannot be produced by the pancreas in type 1 diabetes. Juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes were previous names for type 1 diabetes. The main goal of treating both type 1 and type 2 diabetes is to control blood sugar (glucose) levels within the normal range, with few excursions to low or high levels. Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes, is more a result of insulin resistance (cells not being able to use insulin effectively or at all). Insulin, physical activity, and a type 1 diabetes diet are all used to treat type 1 diabetes. Treatment for type 2 diabetes starts with weight loss, a type 2 diabetes diet, and exercise. If these steps are unsuccessful in lowering the elevated blood sugar levels associated with type 2 diabetes, oral or injectable diabetes medications are then recommended. If other medications stop working, insulin therapy may be started.
