Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection spread by inhaling tiny droplets from an infected person's coughs or sneezes. The lungs are the most affected, but they can affect any part of the body, including the stomach (abdomen), glands, bones, and nervous system.TB is a potentially fatal condition, but it is curable if treated with the appropriate antibiotics. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection. The most contagious type of tuberculosis (TB) affects the lungs (pulmonary TB), but it usually spreads only after prolonged exposure to someone with the illness. The body's natural defence against infection and illness (the immune system) kills the bacteria in most healthy people, and there are no symptoms. Sometimes the immune system is unable to kill the bacteria but is able to keep it from spreading throughout the body. Although you will not experience any symptoms, the bacteria will remain in your body. This is referred to as latent tuberculosis. People with latent tuberculosis are not contagious to others. If the immune system fails to kill or contain the infection, it can spread to the lungs or other parts of the body, causing symptoms to appear within weeks or months. This is referred to as active tuberculosis. Latent tuberculosis may progress to active tuberculosis later in life, especially if your immune system is compromised.
